It goes without saying that here around the office at Luxury Simplified Retreats, the key to our collective hearts is a really good, tasty sandwich. Thankfully, Charleston is filled with some of the best sandwich shops to satisfy the sandwich desire of most any kind of palate! In this foodie city, whether you’re craving a classic sandwich on ciabatta or a pressed panini, you’ll have plenty of options on where to get just what you’re hungry for. Here are some of our favorite sandwich shops located both in and around downtown Charleston.

Circe’s Grotto

panini sandwich

Circe’s Grotto is the best place for a panini in Charleston. Located on Wentworth Street, this hip sandwich shack is a must spot to visit. The relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and wide variety of delicious eats will make you come back time and time again. Our favorites from this local gem are the Caprese Sandwich, Circe’s Grilled Cheese, and the Turkey Avocado. The Caprese Sandwich is a step up from the classic style with added roasted red peppers and pesto. The Circe’s Grilled Cheese is easily one of the best-grilled cheese’s around with smoked gouda, sharp white cheddar, avocado, juicy tomatoes, and crispy bacon. The fresh ingredients and crusty sourdough will be sure to not let you down.

Mozzo Deli

Mozzo Deli is the one-stop-shop for all sandwich lovers. Whether it is a Saturday morning and you’re craving a bacon, egg, and cheese or it’s Wednesday lunchtime and you want your classic ciabatta, Mozzo is the place to go! This deli has two locations, one in Mount Pleasant and another on Meeting Street downtown. Their menu offers over 35 sandwiches to choose from plus tasty sides like pasta salad and delectable baked goods. In need of a good recommendation?  Try the Southern Smoke, this pork sandwich has an abundance of southern flavor!

Boxcar Betty’s

Three words, “fried chicken sandwich” and one place, Boxcar Betty’s. Everyone knows a Southern staple is fried chicken and what better way to enjoy it than a mouthwatering gourmet sandwich. Locally sourced and award-winning, this should be a bucket list restaurant for anyone visiting Charleston! The unique and fun atmosphere lends to a “ten-out-of-ten” experience. Once there you have to try “the Boxcar!”  This sandwich is truly amazing with fried chicken, pimento cheese, peach slaw, pickles, and spicy mayo. They even offer vegetarian options with a pimento-stuffed portobello mushroom cap!

Joey Tomatoes

This delicious deli has coined itself “The best Italian Deli South of Jersey,” and we’re happy to confirm it lives up to expectations! Northerners, who expect a good Italian deli on every corner, are elated to make the trek across the Ravenel Bridge to Joey T’s ! This Mount Pleasant deli has 16 sandwich options but locally loved is their Chicken Parmesan. The classic pan-fried chicken cutlet, marinara sauce, and fresh mozzarella all work effortlessly together to create the perfect sandwich.
