Charleston SC is a city rich in history and culture, famous for it’s southern charm, it’s easy going lowcountry lifestyle, and it’s coastal views. It’s a city where high society living meets old southern hospitality. And being the #1 city in the WORLD, voted by Travel + Leisure, of course your travel plans for the year HAVE to include the Holy City. When it comes time to plan for your trip, here is a weekend trip guide of “musts” for the best places to stay, eat, drink, and play, in one of the globe’s brightest and most welcoming cities.
WHERE TO STAY
Park’s Edge (Downtown): Staying in the heart of downtown Charleston is a must for those lusting after an authentic Holy City experience. Chic, modern, and luxurious, this downtown condo is super convenient for taking in all that downtown historic Charleston has to offer. Not to mention it’s just across the street from some of the best eating, drinking, and shopping on King Street.
Seaclusion (Folly Beach): Steps from the beach, this luxurious retreat is the perfect place to relax and unwind. After a day spent in the ocean or on the beach soaking up some sun, you’ll want to lounge on the expansive deck (or even the private pool) well into the evening. It is the ideal location for enjoying the fresh sea air and cool ocean breezes.
WHERE TO EAT
Poogan’s Porch (Downtown): Looking for authentic southern fare? One of Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishments, Poogan’s Poorch, serves up a menu of soul food staples such as Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken & Waffles, and Pimento BLT (pimento cheese is considered “the caviar of the south” and you can’t pass it up while you’re in town). Find this homey restaurant tucked away on adorable Queen Street downtown.
Bowen’s Island (Folly Beach): For a one-of-a-kind experience, Bowen’s Island is a favorite of locals and adventurous tourists alike. It’s just as famous for its locally harvested oysters, fried shrimp, and hushpuppies as it is for it’s eclectic vibe. Not only will you witness amazing sunsets from the 3 porches, but the authentic atmosphere makes eating a local tray of steamed oysters that much better. A must-visit for any seafood lover!
WHAT TO DO
Browse Sweetgrass Basket Stands (Downtown): A signature of the area, every craftsman has their own unique style, which means that every stand has different and unique baskets, wreaths and more available. It’s always worth taking a few hours to browse the stands, meet the craftsfolk, and learn a bit about the culture and history they’re a part of.
Surf The Washout (Folly Beach): Ready to ride some waves? Located on the eastern side of Folly Beach, The Washout “got its name when Hurricane Hugo ‘washed out’ several homes and much of the nearby land during a massive 1989 storm. Today, these alterations allow the wind to create some of the best surf conditions on the east coast.” If you’re not a surfer yourself, it’s always a blast to watch the countless talented surfers catch some waves on a sunny day. Cowabunga!
WHERE TO DRINK
Vintage Lounge (Downtown): Full of Parisian charm and delectable small plates, Vintage Lounge is one of the more trendy bars on King Street. Featuring an extensive wine list and regular live music on the weekends, this delightful space is the perfect place to begin a night on King Street. And you’ll quickly see why they won “The Most Beautifully Designed Bar in South Carolina” by Architectural Digest.
Chico Feo (Folly Beach): Chico Feo offers that true casual surfer vibe complete with surfboards mounted around, lights dangling from live Oak trees, and an eclectic menu featuring local favorite, num pang. With regular live music kicking off around 10pm, the party on Folly starts at this local favorite.
