So we thought it fitting for you to get to know the team that makes it all happen, every day. We’re introducing you to our newest team member, Managing Director, Alison Benson. Her extensive background in management and hospitality (and tips on best places to take your pup, or get a good view of the city) makes her the perfect addition to our all-star team!
Q: What’s Your Story, Where Are You From?
A: While I’m originally from Minnesota, my family moved to New Jersey when I was a kid so I grew up visiting New York City often. When my family later moved to Athens, GA it was a bit of a culture shock. Shifting from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple to the slow life of the Peach State was definitely an adjustment, but it didn’t take long for it to feel like home.
Q: How Did You Come To Live In Charleston?
A: I started college at UGA in Athens, GA, but I was really ready for a change of scenery and a new adventure. College of Charleston has a great business & real estate program, which made the decision to transfer quite easy. I actually moved to Charleston without ever visiting the city … I thought that made me crazy, but then I quickly learned that it was the right choice for so many reasons.
Q: What’s Your Role In The LS Retreats Team?
A: I joined the LS Retreats team this July as the Managing Director. I’m still getting my footing in this first month, but my goals are to streamline processes and create efficient systems to ensure that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes to provide our guests with the best experience possible from start to finish. I’m excited to be working with such a talented team that really makes things happen and always puts our guests’ needs first.
Q: Do You Have A Favorite LS Retreat?
A: Having spent my youth exploring the streets of New York I’m totally hooked on the walkability of downtown Charleston. My favorite Retreat would have to be Palmetto Loft in downtown Charleston. It’s mid-century modern furnishings give it an urban feel and I love that it’s just a short walk from the Charleston City Market and the French Quarter.
Q: Your Free Time … Where Can We Find You?
A: I’m always trying to explore new places, with a city like Charleston there are countless restaurants and bars to find. I love unwinding from the week at any of the rooftops downtown – a favorite is definitely the rooftop at The Vendue – the skyline view of the city is simply spectacular. On the weekend, I like to pack a cooler and hit the water with friends, whether it be paddle boarding, kayaking or boating. Splurging on a private boat charter is ALWAYS worth it – my friends and I had a great time sailing on the Fate on Charleston Harbor.
Q: You Have An Adorable Dog, Where’s Your Favorite Dog-Friendly Spot?
A: My dog Benny and I always like to go to The Barrel on James Island. It’s a neat concept, basically a dog park with a bar, games, and live music, and since it’s enclosed and designed with dogs in mind, I don’t have to worry about Benny running off or getting into too much trouble.
