ABOUT THE RILEY WATERFRONT PARK IN CHARLESTON
Named after beloved former mayor Joe Riley, Riley Waterfront Park is one of Charleston’s most popular parks for both tourists and locals. It’s a relatively new addition to the city, having finished construction in 1990. It stretches for a half-mile along the east side of the downtown district, meaning that you’ll enjoy a clear view of the Charleston Harbour when you visit.
When the weather is nice (and it usually is in Charleston), you can sit on one of the many swinging benches and spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze coming off the harbor. There are also several spots along the park where you can sit under a canopy of trees and read a book or have a picnic. If you’re traveling with family, this is the perfect spot for a little exploring.
As we said before, Waterfront Park is also the location of Charleston’s famous Pineapple Fountain. You are not allowed to wade in the Pineapple Fountain, but it makes for great photos. If you are looking to cool down, there is a nearby splash fountain that is open for children during the hot summer months.
Stop By The Market During Your Day Out
Waterfront Park is near Charleston’s historic City Market, which has been the cultural heart of Charleston since 1804. The Market is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It features more than 300 booths selling food, arts, crafts, and much more. We love to grab a sandwich from the Market before walking to the park for a quiet lunch.
