ABOUT THE PARK
Named after Joe Riley, Charleston’s well-loved former mayor, Riley Waterfront Park is one of Charleston’s most popular parks for both tourists and locals. The park, which was finished in 1990, stretches for a half mile along the east side of the downtown and is popular because it offers stunning views of Charleston Harbor and provides a way for visitors to experience the waterfront in an up close and personal way.
When the weather is nice, and it usually is in Charleston, you can sit on one of the many swinging benches of this waterfront park in Charleston SC and spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the fresh ocean breeze coming off the harbor. There are also several spots along the park where you can sit under a canopy of trees and read a book or have a picnic.
Waterfront Park is also the location of Charleston’s famous Pineapple Fountain. You are not allowed to wade in the Pineapple Fountain, but it makes for great photos. If you are looking to cool down, there is a nearby splash fountain that is open for children during the hot summer months, or you can sit out on the pier and enjoy the cool ocean breeze or catch a glimpse of dolphins swimming by.
Waterfront Park is conveniently located near Charleston’s historic City Market, which has been the cultural heart of Charleston since 1804. The Market is open every day from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. It features more than 300 booths selling food, arts, crafts, and much more. You can even grab a sandwich to go from the Market’s cafe and enjoy it at Waterfront Park.
