You can’t visit Charleston without visiting its nearby beaches. There are plenty of gorgeous Charleston beaches to visit just a short drive outside the city

Folly Beach

Folly Beach is just south of Charleston and is a barrier island on the South Carolina coast. This Charleston SC beaches has six miles of beachfront where you can lay back and enjoy the ocean waves. There are also many local restaurants and bars for when you want a break from the sun. For more adventurous people, the beach also offers jet skiing and parasailing. The Folly Beach Pier, which extends more than 1,000 feet out into the Atlantic Ocean, is a popular spot for fishermen. The beach is also popular for birds, loggerhead sea turtles, and dolphins.

Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island is a small beach town located on the entrance of the Charleston Harbor. Just a 15-minute drive east of downtown, this Charleston beach is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Lowcountry. The island is small, so it is a good idea to get there early so you can find parking and bring a picnic, some chairs, and an umbrella because you are going to want to stay there all day.

Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms is located just north of Sullivan’s Island and is one of the most family-friendly beaches in the area. The island is great for fishing and laying out on the beach. There are also activities for the more adventurous, including water sports and fishing charters. If you are looking for food and drinks you can stop by the Windjammer, the Isle of Palms premiere Beach Club. The club serves lunch and dinner, has games of beach volleyball, and is open until 2 a.m.

Morris Island

If you are looking for a remote beach that isn’t too far from Charleston, check out Morris Island. The uninhabited island is a 20-minute boat ride from Mount Pleasant and is a bit more adventurous than relaxing. If you are going to visit, make sure to bring food and water, as the only thing on the island is an historic lighthouse from 1876.
